There are many standard supplies that your child will need for his or her studies. Those that are standard and required can be purchased at a designated store. The required items are a school hat (blue, except in summer, when a white hat is necessary, but yellow for 1st grade); indoor shoes (uwabaki); gym clothes and hat (taisougi and kouhakubou). Japanese children all use a special leather backpack called a randoseru. You may purchase one if you wish, but they are not required. Students may use any other kind of backpack to carry school supplies to and from school.
Put your child's name on everything that comes to school. Textbooks are provided free of charge after enrollment of school. Each homeroom teacher will assign workbooks or supplementary reading book individually. Students are not allowed to bring to school food, watches, money, toys or anything that is not for study.
Students should dress neatly. Clothes should be easy to remove so students can change into gym clothes and use the bathroom by themselves. "Accessories," such as jewelry, are not allowed in Japanese school.
