In general, grade placement in Japan is done solely by birth date and not by ability or maturity. For foreign students, too, school officials strongly recommend that students join a grade appropriate for their birth date. However, it may be possible to place a foreign child in a different grade if there is a compelling reason, after consultation between the parents and the school principal. Children who have turned Six by April 1 of the school year may enter first grade in Japan.
