If your child will be absent from school for an extended period due to travel or a home visit, you must inform the school in writing, providing the date your child will return to school. This is necessary for many reasons, including school lunch count and fees. To withdraw your child from the school, the school can help you complete the necessary paperwork (taigaku todoke).

If your child will be absent for just a day or two due to illness or other reasons, you may inform the school by telephoning the teachers' office before 8:30 am, or by writing a note in the child's communication notebook (renrakucho) and having that brought in to school by another student.
